AK Studies- Carlee Malemute

This course examines Alaska’s past, beginning with the study of Alaska’s indigenous people.  Students learn of their rich and varied cultural heritage.  Then the course moves on to a period of Alaskan history where Russia played a large role.  Students learn of the impact that Russia had on Alaska native people and about the deal that led to Alaska joining the union.  Students learn about the rush to Alaska when gold was discovered, and of the second big discovery:  oil.  Students learn about the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and the changes this brought with it. Topics to be covered include but are not limited to: Alaska’s rich cultural diversity

  • Alaska’s purchase from Russia

  • Alaska’s gold rush

  • Alaska’s natural resources

  • Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act

  • Current issues facing Alaskans

Throughout the course, students will be expected to relate the past events to current events.  Students will also identify the contributions of the many cultures and individuals who helped in the development of the United States of America.

Topics to be covered include but are not limited to:

  • Pre-contact & Colonization

  • American Revolution

  • Expansionism

  • Civil War

  • Reconstruction

  • Industrial Revolution

  • World War I

  • Depression Years

  • World War II

  • Cold War Era

  • Modern times

Integrated Leadership- Mr. Kalke

This course is designed for students who have an interest in becoming leaders in their community.  Many young people have already demonstrated an interest in becoming actively involved in matters that directly or indirectly have an impact them.  This course allows students to explore this interest and learn how to be effective leaders either now or in the future.

Topics to be covered include but may not be limited to:

  • Local Organizations:

  • State Organizations

  • National Organizations

  • Orderly Meetings:

  • Fundraising

  • Important Issues

  • Bridging Gaps

Government- Mr. Kalke

Students are encouraged to explore how they might actively participate in state, national, and global politics.  The aim is to help students understand how they may personally impact the government of their school, the city, the state, and the nation.  Students are taught about how the adults around them interact with one another for the betterment of all, and students learn how they may become involved in their government.

Topics to be covered may include but are not limited to:

  • Various forms of government

  • The U.S. as a democratic republic

  • The U. S. Constitution

  • Amendments to the U. S. Constitution

  • U. S. system of checks and balances

  • Role of the different branches of government

  • How bills become laws

  • Responsible citizenship

  • Civil disobedience and the right to protest

  • City and/or local government

  • Procedural Rules
