Cross Country Running
Sidney Huntington High School & Galena Interior Learning Academy field an excellent cross country running team. Galena has many fine trails, lots of clear weather, plenty of fresh air, sparse vehicle traffic, and a variety of terrain to run on. Runners can get hill work at the Dunes, a large sand hill on the way to the Campion site, and train on flat ground on trails around the school.
Varsity practice begins in August. The team travels to meets on the road system, and in the 2010 season the team qualified 5 runners (3 boys & 2 girls) to the state meet. The Hawk runners are coached by Molissa Bifelt. Ms. Bifelt has coached the team for the past two years. In 2010 there were up to twenty students that participated in the cross country program. Cross country running is a fine way to get involved in activities, get in the best physical shape of your life, travel to other locations, and start the school year strong. Coach Bifelt says, "If you are interested in cross country running take the time this summer to run and train during the off season. It’s a great way to prepare for competition and to keep yourself active. Because the season starts in August it is important to have a current physical on file. I highly recommend student athletes get their physicals done in the summer so they are ready to hit the ground running in the fall."
