Varsity Wrestling

Sidney Huntington High School & Galena Interior Learning Academy field a very competitive varsity wrestling squad. During the 2010 season, over 20 students participated in the wrestling program. The team participated in 5 different regular season meets and tournaments around the state. The team traveled to regionals in Valdez and sent 2 wrestlers to the state tournament in Nikiski.

Varsity practice begins in late September. The Hawks wrestling team is coached by Ben Blasco. Coach Blasco began coaching wrestling in Galena in 2004. Coach Blasco was a 3 sport athlete at Theil College in Pennsylvania where he played Football, Track & Field, and Wrestling all four years he was in college. Coach Blasco was an NCAA All-American Wrestler. Athletes on Mr. Blasco's team will learn hard work, dedication, sportsmanship, commitment to the team and to finishing something to the end. Mr Blasco says, "wrestling is a tough sport, the practices and matches are demanding and it takes self-discipline to make weight every week, keep your academics up and be a good sport. Students in wrestling will learn that you don't always win, but as long as you give your best effort, that is what's important."
