My name is Lora Hughes. I was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho. Pocatello is located in the southeast corner of the state. It is generally dry and desert-like, but with mountains surrounding the valley. I attended Idaho State University. I received a bachelors of Science degree in Health Education and Biology with a secondary teaching certificate in 1997.

After teaching for 4 years at a local junior high, I was ready for a change. I wanted to experience a new culture and a new lifestyle. My husband Shayne is also a teacher and we both had dreams of moving and making a change in our lives; we took the opportunity to attend a job fair in Anchorage in April 2001. It was a very positive experience. We had job offers from many areas around the state, but few were willing to hire a husband wife combo whom wanted to teach in the same school and content area.

I am in my fifth year of teaching with GILA. It has been a very valuable learning and teaching experience. I currently teach anatomy and physiology, biology, health education, and girl’s physical education.

In my teaching, I use a variety of teaching methods to ensure student success. I love teaching in Galena. I love that teachers get to know the students on a more personal level due to smaller classes as well as spending time outside of school with them. It is a wonderful working environment. Students are encouraged to work hard and the staff is dedicated to increasing student achievement and their futures.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with our three-year-old daughter. As a family, we enjoy camping, hiking, boating, skiing, snowshoeing, hunting, fishing, trapping, swimming, and berry picking. Virtually anything we can do outside to enjoy this beautiful state and the community of Galena.
