Shayne Hughes:
I am a freaky science guy. I absolutely love science, and it shows. My enthusiasm for science is contagious, and often quickly rubs off on my students. Science fair projects are huge here, and we have taken the state championship two years in a row…and that’s against the big boys in Anchorage. I am from Pocatello Idaho. I taught in Idaho for 6 years before moving to Galena. I have been teaching in Galena now for five years, and love it. I love being in the outdoors (hunting, fishing, trapping, etc.), and try my hardest to bring the outdoors into my classroom. Instead of dissecting a frog, we dissect something like a beaver, martin, or otter. And instead of throwing the frog away when we are done, we cook the beaver and eat it. By bringing in local animals to study, students are able to make the connection between their own culture and science. Plus, it is a great way to build relations with our students. At our school, relationships are as important as the curriculum. I love my village, I love my school, and I love my students. Galena is a great place to live and get an education!
